From the spectacle of the recent solar eclipse to the simple wonder of gazing up at a sea of stars, our fascination with the night sky shows no signs of waning. As summer nights gradually give way to darker evenings, there is no better time to look up and enjoy the beauty of the night sky.

Landal has put together a selection of the best destinations across the UK and Europe for a dark-sky getaway, featuring lodges surrounded by nature and vast, open skies – the perfect base for exploring the cosmos, reconnecting with nature and giving you space to breathe.

Landal Dylan Coastal Resort, Carmarthenshire, Wales

Perched on a hillside with sweeping sea views, Landal Dylan Coastal Resort is an ideal spot for stargazing, whether from the privacy of your own outdoor decking area or through the glass of the infinity pool, with views stretching across the Taf Estuary! Some lodges also feature private hot tubs, perfect for a night spent relaxing under the stars.

The resort is situated next to the Dylan Thomas Boathouse, where visitors can explore the former home and creative retreat of the celebrated Welsh poet who loved nature. Just an hour away is Bannau Brycheiniog National Park (Brecon Beacons), the UK’s first International Dark Sky Reserve and one of the best places to see the Milky Way and thousands of stars lighting up the sky.

Landal Barnsoul, Dumfries and Galloway

Immerse yourself in nature with a stellar stay at Landal Barnsoul, surrounded by the dramatic landscapes of Dumfries and Galloway. Nearby Galloway Forest Park is the largest forest park in Britain, covering more than 300 square miles of outstanding natural beauty, and is home to the UK’s first Dark Sky Park. With exceptionally dark skies and low light pollution, it is considered one of the best places for stargazing in Europe. Look carefully and you might even spot the Andromeda Galaxy, around 2.5 million light-years away and the most distant object visible to the naked eye.

Back at base, stay in accommodation designed to blend seamlessly into the surrounding landscape, with large windows and balconies offering views across the forests and grasslands.

Landal Woodland Lakes, Yorkshire

Nestled between the North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales National Parks, Landal Woodland Lakes is the perfect retreat for experiencing the natural wonders of the night sky. The area is one of the best places in the country for stargazing, thanks to low levels of light pollution and clear horizons. Guests can take in the views from the comfort of their own private hot tub overlooking the peaceful lake. There’s an indoor pool, a wellness centre and a whole range of exciting activities for the whole family to get stuck into, from archery to body zorbs.

The Dark Skies Fringe Festival also takes place from 23 October to 1 November 2026, celebrating the wonders of the night sky and exploring two incredible International Dark Sky Reserves during the peak stargazing season. The North York Moors is one of only 26 locations in the world to be recognised for its pristine dark skies.

Landal Esonstad, Netherlands

Landal Esonstad offers the perfect base for discovering the wonders of Friesland by day and night. Nearby is Lauwersmeer National Park, a designated Dark Sky Park and one of the darkest places in the Netherlands, making it an exceptional spot for stargazing.

As darkness falls, join a peaceful night-time walk with a ranger, listen out for nocturnal wildlife and watch as the Milky Way emerges overhead. On a clear night, there’s even the chance of spotting the Northern Lights.

Landal Natuurdorp Suyderoogh, Netherlands

Surrounded by the waterways and wild landscapes of Lauwersmeer National Park, Landal Natuurdorp Suyderoogh is an ideal base for a peaceful stargazing holiday. The park is situated within an official Dark Sky Park, where minimal light pollution creates exceptional conditions for stargazing, with unobstructed views of the Milky Way, bright stars and, on occasion, shooting stars.

Spend your days exploring the national park on foot, by bike or by boat, before returning to your accommodation to watch the sky transform after dark. Telescopes are also available to hire, offering the chance to look deeper into the night sky.

Landal West-Terschelling, Netherlands

Set amongst the woods and dunes of Terschelling, Landal West-Terschelling offers a peaceful island retreat with some of the Netherlands’ darkest skies nearby. Just a short journey across the island lies De Boschplaat, the country’s first Dark Sky Park, where minimal light pollution creates an exceptional setting for stargazing.

After a day exploring Terschelling’s beaches, dunes and nature reserves, head out after dark to watch the Milky Way emerge above the island. With eight designated spots for night-time visitors, De Boschplaat is the perfect place to pause and unwind. Back at the resort, the tranquil woodland setting provides a cosy base for continuing your evening under the stars.
